October 1 - Geneaology and DNA -

Dr. Curtis R. Sylvester is a Past-President of the Allen County Genealogical Society of Indiana, Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  He presently serves as the Society’s Chair of Programming.  It is a great advantage living in the city with the second largest genealogical library in the world.

Dr. Sylvester has written six books which are shelved in the Family History Room of the Genealogy Center in the downtown public library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  They are also available in the Indiana Room of the Monroe County Public Library and in the Genealogy Library of the Monroe County Historical Center both in Bloomington, Indiana.  Some of the books can also be read on line.

Dr. Sylvester also gives presentations on a variety of topics related to genealogical research, using Family Tree Maker for creating a family tree, writing the results of one’s research, how to create a book using Family Tree Maker and Microsoft Word, and how to publish a book.

Dr. Sylvester’s interest in genealogy began after the death of his mother at the age of 101.  He found boxes of pictures, documents, letters, and other information that she had saved.  Four books were created from the information related to the death of his brother in World War II which is recognized as one of the largest collections in existence related to an individual WWII soldier.  He is still scanning and transcribing documents that will be included in future books.

The Territorial Guard Society of Indiana was created as an affiliate of the Indiana Genealogical Society.  In order to become a member of this Society, one had to present documentation that they had a direct ancestor who was living in the Indiana Territory prior to Indiana become a state on December 11, 1816.  Dr. Sylvester took on the challenge of researching his relatives.  On April 27, 2013, Dr. Sylvester was inducted into the Territorial Guard Society after providing the proper evidence that verified he had eight great-grandparents who lived in the Indiana Territory.

Dr. Sylvester enjoys sharing with groups interested in learning how to preserve the heritage of their families, their ancestors, their communities, and even their own lives.  https://genealogybeyondtheresearch.wordpress.com/
