AARP Michiana 2017 Programs 

January and February Meetings are not held because of weather and members being out of town for the winter.

Meetings will be at 2 pm

March 6 - 
 Gardening tips Mr. Greg Leyes, Gardening Expert with Ginger Valley, will be teaching "Container Gardening".
April 3 - Being an Active Citizen - Interested in knowing more about our legislative process? Learn how to find out about upcoming laws, advocate on what is important to you and how to contact your elected officials. Ms. Geri Pawlewski, President of the League of Women Voters South Bend Area, will cover how to contact your officials and will have free 2017 "Citizen's Guide to Representative Government" booklets available for attendees. Ms. Suzan Kesim will introduce the 3-3-3 Method to help make changes in your community.
May 1 - Downsizing Options with Ms. Melanie Hoefle with a "Smart Move" program and a tour of the St. Paul's facility
June 5 - Antiques Appraisal with Ms. Sue Strubble Have you always wondered about what an hierloom is worth? One item only please. Members will have their items evaluated first.
July 10 - Mentoring in Schools  Interested in making a difference in our community helping children?  Ms. Debra Walker, Outreach Coordinator of Big Brothers/Big Sisters and  Ms. Jennifer Lidell, Mentor Coordinator of the South Bend Education Foundation will explain how even 1 hour can make a difference. 
August 7 - Ms. Eve Finnessy, Executive Director of Forever Learning and Ms. Katie Rodriguez, Senior Scholars Coordinator of IvyTech will talk about Continuing Education available to Seniors.
September 11 - Learn about Drug Interactions - Ms. Ludmilla Emerson, NP from the South Bend Clinic Endocrinology Dept., will talk about Drug Interactions and how to check for them. 
October 2 - Preventing Senior Fraud and Abuse - Ms. Loretta M. Bowes, Abuse in Later Life Case Manager at the Family Justice Center of St. Joseph County will let us know the resources available and how to help someone you think may be a victim of abuse. A representative from the South Bend Police Department will also be presenting.

November 6 - Medicare / Honoring our Vets
Mr. Virgil Mincy, a SHIP volunteer will update us on Medicare.  The SHIP Program in Saint Joseph County is coordinated by REAL Services and by Saint Joseph Health System.  SHIPs offer local, personalized counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families. 
SHIP Counselors can help with things like:
·         Your Medicare questions, including your benefits, coverage, premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance
·         List item Complaints and appeals
·         List item Joining or leaving a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), any other Medicare health plan, or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D)
