AARP Michiana 2015 Programs
Jan 5 – CANCELLED - Topic: Caregiving Stories We will be sharing local Caregiving Stories and providing support and encouragement for those currently Caregiving. "More than 1.34 million Hoosiers provide unpaid care for their older loved ones as family caregivers—valued at about $9.4 billion annually", reports AARP Indiana. You can share your personal story and view other stories at: https://act.aarp.org/iheartcaregivers/ The public is welcome to come and share their experiences at this local meeting.
Jan 26 - Topic: Pre-Registration for AARP Tax Assistance - Pre-registration begins for the February free tax assistance for low and medium income individuals and senior citizens that is provided by AARP tax counselors certified by the IRS.

Feb 2 – CANCELLED - Topic: Jobs for those Over 50, Vets or those with Disabilities AARP Michiana will be hosting a panel of experts from WorkOne for those wanting employment who are over 50, Disabled and/or a Veteran on February 2, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Sanctuary, 3602 S. Ironwood Drive, South Bend, Indiana 46614. Speakers include: Ms. Melissa Gard, Disability Resource Coordinator, Mr. Michael Patton, Veteran’s Services, as well as, experts Gwen Williams and Latisha Marsh from the Intensive Services Staff who oversee Training at WorkOne. WorkOne services and programs, including training and certification, Senior Community Employment Services, Veterans Services and Disability Services will be discussed.
Mar 2 – Topic: Liveable Communities and Gardening - AARP Michiana will be featuring Mr. Jonathon Geels, PLA, ASLA Landscape Architect and Urban Designer at Troyer Group, Indiana Chapter President of ASLA, Founder of Keep South Bend Beautiful and the 100 Ideas Project. He will be speaking on "Sustainability and ADA - American Disabilities Act". Mr. Greg Leyes, Gardening Expert with Ginger Valley, will be teaching "Gardening for Seniors".
Apr 6 – Topic: Skin Care for Seniors Features:
Dr. Kedziora is a radiation oncologist with Michiana Hematology-Oncology, P.C. You may also check out his video on our website, www.TheHeartofCancerCare.com.
Guy Kedziora, MD earned his medical degree from the Center for Health Sciences College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee. He served his residency and intership at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke's Medical
Center, Department of Therapeutic Radiology in Chicago. He is a gellow of American College of Radiation Oncology, and a memberof the American College of Radiation Oncology and the American Society of
Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology. Dr. Kedziora is also an active staff member at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. He is board-certified in Radiation Oncology by the American Board of Radiology.
He will be discussing skin care while receiving radiation treatments.
Ms. Holly Kelly, Nurse Practitioner at the South Bend Clinic. She will be discussing skin care for seniors.
We will also be having a Surprise Guest. She is a professional makeup artist for TV and runway personalities. She will be giving a makeover to one lucky attendee during the meeting!
May 4 – Topic: Pet Health and Potawatomi Zoo - Dr. Visser, "The Pet Vet" will be presenting on the benefits of pets for Seniors and tips on Pet care. Marcy Dean, Executive Director of the Potawatomi Zoo on the Grandparent's Program at the Zoo.
Jun 1 – Topic: Antiques Treasures with Sue Struble, Sue’s Auction & Appraisals will give history information and estimated values of items presented by the audience. One item per person and as time allows.
Jul 6 – Topic: Brain Plasticity We used to believe that the brain stopped changing in adulthood, but we now know that is not the case. Brain plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity, refers to the brain’s ability to change throughout life. The brain has an amazing capacity for growth through learning, forming new neural connections even as we age. Learn how understanding this concept of neuroplasticity can help you boost your performance. Presenter: Dory Lawrence, MA

Aug 4 - Night Out Against Crime - St. Patrick's Park from 5 - 8 p.m. Multiple agencies will be available and provide resources for fighting crime in our community. AARP will be participating as part of our Scam Prevention program.

Niezgodski (District 7) Some copies of passed legislation will be available. Note: Seating is limited.
Sep 24 - Topic: WorkOne Seminar For Veterans, Disabled or Over 50
Specialists in these areas will give tips and advice on how to navigate the job market more effectively. WorkOne will have their top specialists in these areas give presentations from 2 - 4 pm and will be available to schedule followup appointments. The UAW Local 5 Hall, 1426 S Main St, South Bend, IN 46613, (574) 289-5551, has graciously agreed to host this event. Their facility is on one level with easy access.

He started of The Business Center, Inc. in 1984, specializing in helping small business owners and individuals reduce taxes by using the tax laws to their benefit.
Protecting Against Scams with Ms. Dreama Jensen of the Better Business Bureau will be advising us on the current scams and how to protect ourselves.

Mr. Gary Murray, a SHIIP volunteer for 7 years will update us on Medicare. The SHIP Program in Saint Joseph County is coordinated by REAL Services and by Saint Joseph Health System. SHIPs offer local, personalized counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families.

· Your Medicare questions, including your benefits, coverage, premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance
· List item Complaints and appeals
