AARP Michiana 2019 Planned Programs
January 7th – Understanding Reverse Mortgages
Mr. Ron Pinter, from Ft. Wayne, has been certified on FHA Insured Reverse Mortgages since 2010 advising Elder Law Specialists, Certified Financial Planners, CPAs and Banks. He will be educating and informing us about the facts and questions to ask when considering a Reverse Mortgage.
February 4th – Finding Medical Care for Dental, Eyes, Hearing
Mary Klempay, 1st Vice District Governor Trustee of the Lions, is to assist those with speech and hearing impairments who are unable to obtain help elsewhere. They make funds available for charitable, educational, and scientific research. One of their main goals is to eliminate communication barriers for those with speech and hearing disorders. They do this by providing loaner hearing aids for children of needy families and low-cost hearing aids for those adults who qualify. Working in conjunction with Riley Hospital for Children and audiologists around the state, ILSH has made thousands of aids available.
The Director of the IUSB Dental Hygiene School will detail how their services are available to those in need and provide an excellent training experience for students.
March 4th – Enjoying Nature
Jamie Hartzke, Leisure Services Manager for the St. Joseph County Parks will give an overview of the many wonderful services available at our local parks.
Melissa Ginter, the Education Chair for the South Bend-Elkhart Audubon Society (SBEAS), will be teaching how to enjoy and keep our birds happy and singing.
April 1st – Meet the Candidates
We invite the local candidates to come and answer questions from our Seniors about their areas of concern.
May 6th – Violence in South Bend
The South Bend Police Department will be addressing concerns about the violence in South Bend, what Seniors can do to better protect themselves and answer questions about current initiatives.
June 3rd – Helping Our Kids
Noel Mathews, Director of Foster Grandparents Programming, Real Services will be advising on how the Real Services program benefits both grandparents and the children they are helping.
Lt. Herron, of the South Bend Police Department, we give an overview of how the Police Athletic League is doing community outreach.
Peg Hires, Grandparents as Parents, will explain the challenges faced by grandparents having to raise their grandchildren and how the community can assist them.

Join us to find out the many services they offer and ways we can help them serve the community.

September 9th – Homeless Issues
Understanding the scope, the current programs to assist and what needs to be done to reduce the suffering for the homeless. We will be having speakers from the Center for the Homeless and Michiana 5 for the Homeless.
October 7th – Preventing Cyber Crime
Expert Eric Tamashasky, from the South Bend Police Cyber Crime Unit at Notre Dame and Officer Tim Taylor, will give tips on how Seniors can stay safe online and what to do if they experience scams or identity theft.
November 4th – Changes in Medicare
A SHIP volunteer will update us on Medicare. The SHIP Program in Saint Joseph County is coordinated by REAL Services and by Saint Joseph Health System. SHIPs offer local, personalized counseling and assistance to people with Medicare and their families.
SHIP Counselors can help with things like:
· Your Medicare questions, including your benefits, coverage, premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance
· List item Complaints and appeals
· List item Joining or leaving a Medicare Advantage Plan (like an HMO or PPO), any other Medicare health plan, or Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D)
